Welcome Freshers!
I’m Sarah and I’m your Action Rep. Firstly, a huge congratulations on getting into Loughborough but most of all, Cayley Hall!
What is Action?
Action is the volunteering section in the Union, it offers a diverse range of volunteering projects such as assisting under-achieving children in local schools, working with the elderly, sports mentoring in local colleges, working abroad in places such as Africa, Asia and Latin America or even helping improve the environment in our local community. The list is endless and there really is a project suitable for everyone whatever your time commitment and personal interests.
How does Cayley get involved?
Last year Cayley got involved in kids Arts and Crafts days, gardening projects with adults with learning difficulties, charity events – Cayley came second in Project 5000 (each hall tries to collect as much tinned food as possible to donate to a local homeless shelter) and many more. But this year we hope to get even more involved!
However there are also plenty of projects you can sign up to yourself…
Action has a number of projects that you can sign up to such as Kids Trip – a perfect chance to volunteer without a major time commitment. This involves helping out on organised trips like taking children to theme parks, laser quest, the cinema, bowling or the zoo. Number Partners and Right to Read are projects where volunteers go into local schools and work with children who are often greatly lacking in confidence to help them improve their reading and numeracy skills. We also have plenty of projects related to Sports (sports coaching, Get Set, Running Action – to help those fighting depression), Youth Shelter projects, Special Needs projects and Special Events such as Loughborough’s Community Fun Day. There is so much that you can get involved in, and this is just a taster.
How serious is it?
Cayley has a competitive nature and this year we want Cayley to be in the top 3 in Action (preferably first place of course!) The more you get involved in Action, the more points Cayley are awarded! Taking part in Action is extremely rewarding not only for the people you help, but also personally. I hope you’ll all be raring to get involved! (It also looks very good on your CV and you get an Action t-shirt and chocolate every time you take part, so why wouldn’t you?!)
How can you get involved in Action?
I’ll be organising/advertising plenty of A-Teams throughout the year, starting in Freshers, so make sure you sign up! Or you can sign up to projects yourself, plenty of information is available in the Action booklets (available in the Union, Action Office, or just ask me for one) and if you even have an idea for a new project that you think will make a difference to the community, we can help you set it up.
Cayley Action will offer you so many opportunities so make sure you grab them! Not only is it extremely rewarding and has a brilliant social side, but most of all it’s a huge amount of fun! Make sure you join www.facebook.com/groups/cayleyaction too for the latest news/events and you can also visit www.lufbra.net/action for more information.
If you have any other questions about Action before you get to Cayley, feel free to email me s.n.haar-10@student.lboro.ac.uk or message me on facebook!
Look forward to meeting you all in Freshers, get ready for the best two weeks of your life!
