Cayley Fresher’s social side 2011/12

Featured

Hello Freshers!

Welcome to Cayley and welcome to the best year of your life! I can promise you now that if you take all the opportunities offered to you in Cayley and at Loughborough you will have an amazing time here.

My name is Harry and I am one of your two social secs. We together have organised your freshers week and during the week, making sure you have the best time possible. On this page Graeme and I will go through the whole social side of Cayley so you can get an idea of nights out, clubs, bars and anything else associated with it.

The move in date this year is Tuesday 27th September.

Throughout the week there are usual nights that the majority of people will go out on, these nights usually standard places to go to with some nights having more than one option:

- Monday – Rain is at its best on this night however Revolution are opening a new night next year to try and compete. Both have good music and decent drinks prices.

- Tuesday – Stupid Tuesdays @ The Union! Cheap drinks (e.g. Shot and a pint for £1.95), cheesy music and it usually ends up being a decent night. Usually only Fusion is open for Tuesday nights but sometimes, depending on time of year, the whole union might be open.

- Wednesday – Hey Ewe @ The Union! Drink prices vary but usually about £1.50 for a Pint or a Shot. The whole union will be open so you can go for a wander and lose everyone very easily! The night is called Hey Ewe and is a big night for all the sports teams as alot of the games, training and socials are on Wednesdays.

-Thursday – Revolution and Rain. A lot like a Monday night but Rain sometimes runs an alternative ‘Dub N Bass’ night which reaches out to you dubstep/drum and bass heads! Rewind Thursdays at revs is always full, and was a popular choice for Cayley last year!

- Friday – FND @ The Union -Most people go out on Fridays, no lectures and a free day to remember the previous nights antics. The whole union is open and its usually a good night.

- Saturday – Echoes and Rain, Revolution. Echoes generally dominates this night but it can be a bit of an acquired taste for many. Revs offers a slightly more up market version of their other nights they do in the week. Rain pretty much stays the same as their other nights.

- Sunday – EQ/Wild. The same place but no one can decide what to call it. Always a good night if you can get a few of you to go out, reasonable drinks and cheesy/good music.

So there’s a normal week summed up for you. Yet it will change every week with events at the union, they usually have someone performing like last year we had Tinie Tempah and Example. Cayley will be sorting out socials a couple of times a month, where we will supply a load of beverages and sometimes a DJ, socialise as a hall and then move onto a club.

 Warm-ups to a night out

The pre- night warm up would normally occur in someone’s room with a group of mates, in the kitchen or corridor if there is a larger group of you or if there is a birthday or hall social it would be in the Common room which is quality place to have it due to a sound system, ping pong table and pool table. Also depending on the weather there are quite a few areas where you can chill outside.

The Village shop is about a 30 second walk from where ever you are in Cayley so there’s never an excuse to be running low on supplies. However in the long run this shop can be quite expensive, so trips to Sainsburys and/or Tesco can save you massive amounts of money, especially if you are buying beverages, trust me.

Freshers Fortnight – What you need!

In Freshers there are a few essential things on top of what we have to said to bring in general:

Money – Work hard this summer, your student loan might not come through for a week or two, you don’t want to be short of cash in these few weeks. Make the most of it!

Fancy Dress – If you haven’t already looked on ‘what you need to bring’ then have a quick look after this, its a very useful basis to go on. However the main fancy dress items you will need to bring with you, in accordance with some of the themes in freshers are:

  • ARMY
  • SCHOOL
  • BEACH
  • POLICE
  • BAYWATCH
  • NAVY

If you are struggling to get anything for these themes then don’t worry there are loads of fancy dress shops in Loughborough and also Cayley have organised for a company to sort out packs for you guys that include the essentials like paint head bands, sunglasses etc (SEE BELOW). They will be selling the packs on your first day, so make sure your parents are there so you don’t have to buy anything!! Trust me it helps to have your parents there, I told my mum to bugger off so I could look cool, I was then about £120 out of pocket without even buying a drink!

‘Get your official Cayley Freshers Fancy Dress here & help Cayley earn money to spend on socials for you later in the year! :
http://www.dressfresh.co.uk/start/loughborough/cayley

Food and Beverages - Before the start of term there are a couple of things you can do to save a huge amount of money during freshers and term. You should try to take advantage of having your parents buying your food in the summer, make sure you buy food for uni in bulk so you don’t have to buy as much yourself in term. Buying little snacks and meals yourself will build up throughout the term without you realising.

I understand that there will be people who do not drink.  However, for those of you who do…make sure you stock up for freshers week, ultimately buying your drink in small amounts before a night out will cost you a small fortune before the end of the year.

Get excited guys, these truly are the best two weeks of your life.

Fresher Survival Guide

You are now two weeks away from coming to Cayley and joining Loughborough is a very exciting prospect.Whilst I imagine you eagerly anticipate the big nights out and the responsible drinking that are in store, you’re going to have to move in first, recently we have been getting loads of questions about the moving in process-hopefully this will answer some of your queries.

BOOKING IN SLOTS

If you haven’t already, you should receive an e-mail soon regarding online induction via the Loughborough university website. After completing this you will be asked to book a time slot in which you can arrive at the university. This can be anytime between 09:00 until 17:00 on Tuesday 27th September 2011. Whilst these time slots are not stuck to regimentally, it is important that you book a time that is realistically achievable to avoid congestion and queues to get onto campus. So wait for that email if you don’t get it ring Student Accommodation services (SAC) on 01509 222 258/53 or email them on sac@lboro.ac.uk

When you arrive!

You will be directed to the Cayley car park. From there, you will be under the guidance of the Cayley Fresher Helper Team. You will be taken by a member of the team to sign in at the Whitworth building, and then you will be given the key to your room, then the time consuming process of moving in. The Fresher Helper Team will help you take things to your room and help you to settle in.

There are then two more things to do:

  1. collect your Student Card, we will help you- it will be in the dining hall!
  2. The other job is to go into the Cayley dining hall, and see from day one what Cayley has to offer you.

Here you will be able to pick up your fresher’s t-shirt, sign up for IMS trials, get involved in Action & RAG, pay your hall subs and buy Cayley stash, as well as the all important Fresher social packs.

So it is important that you bring your parents and their wallets to fund things that you will need, but what are all these things and how do they help?

HALL SUBS

Hall subs are what are paid by every student in every hall at Loughborough!

You’ll be pleased to hear Cayley offers one of the cheapest hall subs on campus. These help to run the hall through out the year, from paying for socials to funding IMS events, book pitches for training, maintain the hall (we may need to buy a new projector), its to help the hall you are part of. This year, fresher hall subs will be £50, payable on the Cayley website or on arrival in the dining hall. PLEASE NOTE IT IS COMPULSORY TO BUY THIS!

SOCIAL PACKS

The social packs are completely seperate from the union’s Platinum cards. The pack has been created by your social secs who have worked hard to drive down the prices to make it cheaper for your guys. The pack includes:
- Travel from campus to town
- Entry into clubs in town, not the union (9 nights)
- Drinks and DJ’s for some of the socials
- The opening and staffing of our very own Cayley bar

The pack will cost £30 and beleive me, if you want to make the most of your freshers fortnight, it’s worth buying. You will be able to buy the pack on the day you move in and you will get a wristband to show you’ve bought it. Make sure you have your parents with you on the day, as without them you will find yourself spending a huge amount before you’ve bought a drink.

PLATINUM and PLATINUM EXTRA

The university platinum deal only gets you into the Union however this is a great buy also. However, it is nothing to do with the social pack. Also, the fresher Ball Ticket is included in the price of platinum. All details of platinum can be found on www.lufbra.net .

If you have any further questions regarding moving in day on the 27th, don’t hesitate to post a comment here or on the Cayley Hall Fresher’s 2011/12 facebook page, and a member of the Committee will try to reply to you A.S.A.P. See you all in 2 weeks time for the greatest fortnight of your life.

HGM Overview 31/05/11

Power point-Committee

Hall chair mentioned that Hall subs are being taken over by the University.
However, implications could have an effect this year.

Questions that were raised

Contact to town

Way girl’s sport is run in Cayley

Motions

Committee can chose a New Media rep for Fresher’s -PASSED

Obtaining a new Football table four man-PASSED

Obtaining a new Mascot outfit-cougar-PASSED

Obtaining a new Projector-PASSED

What the committee will endeavour to do to improve on.

This terms HGM was a typically small one. However, plenty still turned out to
witness the spectacle of Hustings one last time. The question and answer session
was very helpful to the committee, however one could describe it as quite heated
in parts. Overall, the HGM went well and the booming command of Charles
Cusworth filled us with confidence for the next HGM.

Contact with Town

In response to the questions, we will be attempting to contact town in much
more imaginative ways. I would like to add I am attempting to add a role to
a certain committee members position in order to fulfil what is said below.
Hopefully tackling the issue with contact to town

-Firstly, we think that posting to those in town on a weekly maybe bi-weekly
basis would be an option.

-Ultimately, the more methods the better, and although facebook is a pain and
not everyone uses it. Through a recent survey it is clear that the majority use
facebook to find out what is going on.

Girl’s sport

Firstly, I am glad that the HGM expressed their concern for girl’s sport.
Ultimately, we are all in favour of having the committee kept on their toes. It
makes people work hard and that can only be good for the hall.

-In response to queries, the committee will discuss ways in which we as a
committee can put pressure on each other and also how the hall can put pressure
on us.

-However, I would definitely argue this be done in a fair way.

-The committee believe this is a matter, which is quite serious. Therefore we
need to discuss first before we promise anything to the hall. However, everything
that is discussed hall members will be able to see on minutes posted on the
Cayley hall website.

New Media rep position

The hall kindly gave the current committee the power to elect a new member
quickly. Ultimately, this new position is long overdue, and with many other halls
now having three media reps we feel that the new addition can bring nothing but
positives to cayley. The way they would be voted in is through interview by the
committee and anyone can apply. Their position would start immediately and
the person elected would then fall into the usual committee process. This second
position would be open in the February hustings.

Any questions about HGM or Hustings, please do not hesitate to contact via email

New Media Rep’

Criteria for new Media Rep

Must be able and:

-have a good knowledge of computer systems and be able to create posters, adverts and banners.

-must be creative, imaginative and hardworking.

-be proactive, there needs to be a real sense of wanting to do this.

Moreover, those who wish to go for this position must realise it comes with work.

-You are expected to film or take pictures of most of the Cayley IMS events for the hall, and this will involve close work with sports secs.

- Anyone going for this role must be serious.

We look forward to your applications.

Tom & the Committee

To apply

Application process will run from (05/06/11-10/06/11), sent via e-mail to cayleyhgm@hotmail.co.uk, with a manifesto and a written application.

In the written application, you should include;

Why you think you would be good?

Why you want to be a media rep?

What experience do you have?

This role is not about being part of fresher’s week, or bringing something different to the committee. This is about being suitable for the role of media rep and being able to fulfill the role adequately. There will be challenges that will be put to you in order to see if you are being serious i.e to create a poster for an IMS sport event. However, these challenges will be revealed at the end of the application period. Interviews will be taken by the committee, taking place on the evening of 13/06/11. Being aware of the exams, we will ensure that interviews are brief.

The hall will be made aware of the candidates and their manifestos, as well as any progress and developments in the hustings. Any issue a hall member has with the hustings and/or it’s developments, email cayleyhall11@gmail.com, but this format was voted in via a motion at the HGM in order to ensure the Media Rep is in place A.S.A.P.

Good luck with your campaigns, and we will keep everyone posted.

Fresher Helpers List

Dear Cayley,

We are writing to inform you of this years lucky bunch of fresher helpers.  This task has been painstakingly difficult and the warden team have had a heavy influence. We would just say that there are a select few on the reserve list and if the warden team decide to strike you off then they can at any point for anything. We would like to congratulate all that got on. I would also like to commiserate those that didn’t. This has possibly been the worst job for the committee so far! I would like to make all of the new fresher helpers aware that there is a meeting for them coming up soon, a time will be announced soon.  Please don’t take any of this personally. Ideally we would have had everyone that applied.

The people who have been chosen were chosen on the 3 grounds and then looked at carefully by wardens and sub-wardens.

The list is based on all committee member’s and the warden’s input. See below!

Any questions please speak to Tom Allright.  Thank you.

Lost!

You know the next few hours are going to be interesting when you’re sitting on a coach at midnight
blindfolded! We got our t-shirts, signed the necessary medical forms, had our phones sealed up
so we couldn’t use them and put on our blindfolds for a two hour journey having no idea where
we were going. All we knew was it would be 100 miles away and we had to make it back as fast as
possible!

The coach my team was on got dropped in a tiny village called Cherry Burton, which we found out
a couple hours later is in Yorkshire, and as we all got off the coach it was guesswork as to what
direction to try. We started walking for a while, slowly breaking off from the other groups when we
came across some more villages, which all seemed smaller than the one we were originally dropped
off in. We knew at this point we weren’t doing very well! At about 5am we managed to find a road
to start our hitch-hiking attempt. After about two minutes of standing by the road a police car
stopped and decided to give us a lift as apparently we were headed to a dangerous area in which
we were likely to be offered drugs! They dropped us just outside Hull whilst giving is tips on how to
avoid train fares (i.e. hiding in the toilets!). We got to Hull train station to realise we had just missed
a 5.20am train to Sheffield, so attempted some more hitch-hiking which failed miserably before we
got the next train closer to 6.30am.

When we arrived in Sheffield, we started to have problems. The train and coach companies had
already let a few teams onto their transport for free and now they were stopping us from doing
this. We decided to give hitch-hiking another go, and after a couple hours and through a short
rain shower, we gave up. Our plan was to just sneak onto a train but after being threatened with a
criminal record from the transport police we decided we were beaten and had to buy a train ticket
back to Loughborough!

My team managed to make it back 17th out of around 50 teams which we were quite proud of,
however on returning to Loughborough I was more interested in a shower and some sleep! Lost was
an amazing experience and a really fun way to raise some money for charity. I think anyone who has
taken part in it would definitely recommend it as a brilliant and very unique RAG experience.
